Sourcing
Headlight Housing
I decided I did not want to harm my OEM original headlights that Philzpeed worked his magic on, and i bought some cheap headlights on amazon with black housings. I say cheap, i do mean comparitively. The next step was to identify the projectors.
Projectors
I decided to source all LED projectors, i did not want to deal with bulbs anymore, i do understand now that if it goes bad I have to replace the entire assembly. but i searched around and i went for aliexpress LED projectors. I watched the prices go up after i bought them. One of the things i remember specifically was how much room there is behind the lens, the answer is not a lot. I I originally ordered 3″ bi-led projectors and i got the headlights separated and quickly realized they would not fit, and not even close. I wrapped up the headlight and went back to the drawing board. I ended up going with a 2.5″ BiLED projector retrofit kit, still keeping the blue film that i wanted initially, because it looks cool. The next thing i wanted to look into was a dedicated high beam LED projector. These are not that common and a lot of folks i saw were going dual 2.5″ biled projectors. They do exist, and ended up really digging to bug eye looking high beams, but more importantly they are very compact and fit within the small space that is the high beam reflector. lastly I needed to get some shrouds to hide the industrial look. This is where things went a little sideway from plan to realization. I wanted a super simple rounded shroud and when i mocked it all up, it looked really silly. I ended up with a much smaller shroud that is a bit more textured, i love the looks, it adds depth to the headlight and it doesn’t look as “aftermarket” believe it or not. The tiny lens with a huge shroud just looked weird. The shroud i went with actually came with the projector, so that really helped, I had purchased several shroud styles to test and never really liked any of them.
Tools and Other Parts
Watching videos on how to do all of this, I saw a couple of things that i thought would be awesome to have around. Butyl rubber for resealing the headlights, and some safer pry tools than screw drives. other things that helped me was some small 6″-9″ sections of 2×4’s to help in the oven. Lastly, a ton of microfiber towels and invisible glass.
The Process
Separate the housings
do not try the heat gun method, just toss it in the oven at 250 for 15 minutes. undo the clips and use the clip pry to separate, once you get it started keep pulling and it will all come apart. Using the kit I used, i did not have to modify the housings other than removing bulb retaining clips and the bulb guard in the reflector housing.
Install the Projectors
follow the instructions Align the projectors as best you can
Re-Seal the Housings
